Big Squaw Mountain Ski Area doesn’t have lodging on site and lodging is frankly sparse near by. The two options are Moose Mountain Inn and Kineo View Lodge. They will get the job done if you need a place to stay near Big Squaw Mountain.

If you want to go to Big Squaw Mountain but want something a little nicer than our recommendation is to check Vacation Rental by Owner (“Vrbo”). Often you can find something a bit more modern or a cabin.

There just isn’t a ton of tourists that go that deep up into Maine so the chain hotel options are limited. The first Hampton Inn is 2 hours south in Waterville.

When Is the Best Time to Go to Big Squaw Mountain Ski Area?

Big Squaw Mountain Ski Area is only open on Fridays through Sundays. None of the days are bad days to go. The mountain is so deep into Maine that overcrowding is rare. It isn’t like being at a resort within distance of New York City, there is a lot less people at Big Squaw Mountain.

Big Squaw Mountain Ski Area doesn’t do night skiing and the trails close at 4 p.m. This will allow you to get back to your lodging safely before night time but does take the fun out of being able to night ski.

Big Squaw Mountain has a rental shop and tuning shop. They can get you on the mountain if you are missing some gear but they aren’t there to sell you a full new kit. If you are looking to get new skis or a snowboard before the season than our go to is usually The House.

Its easier if you just show up to the mountain prepared. They can tune in any gear though and get it ready to shred the mountain.

Big Squaw has a terrain park on Lower Squaw Brook. It is built for the community so while there is something for everyone, you won’t find the biggest air jumps at Squaw Mountain. Although there is enough to keep riders happy.

The best beginner trail to start out on is Upper Fitzgerald to Lower Fitzgerald. Beginner than quickly progress to harder trails like Upper Kennebec and Upper Roach.

Big Squaw Mountain Ski Area blows their own snow on most of their trails. The priority is to open the beginner trails awhile working on some of the intermediate trails. Finally they get the expert level trails opened too and the full mountain opens up.

There are 29 trails at Big Squaw Mountain serviced by 1 chair lift. There is a mix of runs for all skill levels but better yet, long runs that take a good ride to get down. The trails will keep you busy all day at Big Squaw Mountain making it one of the reasons it is worth a visit.

There is no tubing at Big Squaw Mountain. It is an all mountain ski area that is open 3 days a week with one chair lift. If you are looking to get run after run in, than you should go to Big Squaw Mountain.

Big Squaw Mountain doesn’t have any downhill mountain biking in the summer. The ski area slows down considerably and extra maintenance is performed during the off season.
